DIY french cleat

So epic blogger fail. I promised you I would be back Friday to show you how I hung my mirror, and I failed. I would bore you with excuses, but I'd rather just share!

All you need is a piece of 1x3 or 1x4. Cut it to whatever length you need. Since my mirror was about 35 inches long, I cut mine at 32 inches.

Cut your piece lengthwise or 'hot dog style' at 45 degrees. You do need a table saw or a circular saw that does angles for this.

Then take half of your piece and hang it on the wall with the angle going toward the wall.

Drill directly through the piece of wood into your stud. You have to hang it in the stud (or use anchors) or all this work is pointless...

Take the half of the piece of wood and attach it to the back of your mirror, or whatever else you're hanging on the wall.

Then all you have to do is slide the mirror down on top of the piece you have hanging on the wall. So simple! It works especially well with the mirror since we built it with edging that makes it sit flush against the wall.

The french cleat really is my new favorite way to hang things. It's so sturdy, easy and cheap!

  1. I'm happy to see you enabled comments. :) I saw this method on Ron Hazelton and I've been meaning to hang a mirror with a French cleat like this for a year, even though I've had a circular saw for a few months now. I might have to try with my circular saw, although angled cuts on it frighten me. =D

  2. I always get nervous when I try new things, although once I do them I normally think I was silly to be scared! The french cleat is definitely perfect for the mirror. Once you do it you'll be amazed!
