I recently had a friend ask me to build her some picture frames.
Her house is all cute and beachy and since we live in base housing, we constantly need a little extra color. She picked out the colors and had some extra fabric from curtains she made, so she brought it all to me to create something fun.
I came up with these layered picture frames. I've seen similar examples on Pinterest but with a clothes pin to hold the picture, but I really wanted to use glass to put the picture behind.
I made 4 frames, 2 to fit a 5x7 picture and 2 to fit a 4x6. I started with a few pieces of scrap 1x12 wood I had on hand.
I cut the scrap wood 2.5 inches bigger on every side than the glass. So for a 5x7, I cut the back piece 10x12 and for the 4x6 I cut it to 9x11.
Then I made a false cut down the center with my table saw. The safest way to do this is probably to use a circular saw but I removed the blade guard and kickback guard and set my saw blade to cut about 1/4" into the piece. (Dad, I promise I was very careful!)
Then I cut a smaller piece of scrap plywood I had to be one inch bigger than the glass on all sides. So for the 5x7, it was 7x9, and for the 4x6, it was 6x8. I stacked them together to make sure that was the look I wanted.
Then I painted the back pieces...
And sanded the middle pieces down so the edges wouldn't snag my fabric. I took those inside and stapled the fabric onto the wood using my staple gun.
I sanded the edges of the colored blocks a little bit to shabby them up, then I added a little glue, stacked the wood together and nailed then from the back with my nail gun. I set the glass on top and added brads to each corner. (Mine are from Lowes in the nail/screw aisle.) Ta-da!
Here are a few more pictures...
I can't wait to see them up on her walls with pictures of her beautiful baby boys in them! Yay!
